Fun fact- in the hills of Hollywood sits one of the oldest outdoor performing arts venues still being used by the top industry professionals. Even better, every performance, from music to dance to theater is centered around representing the diversity found within the city of Los Angeles.

I was there as part of my internship, manning the booth for The Multiracial Americans of Southern California (MASC) at the entrance of Ford Theaters- and welcoming our community into a world I didn't know existed on this wide 30 something acre lot of rolling hills. As the sun began to set men showed up with their brim hats high and smiles from ear to ear. Women were dressed to the nines in bright, fun fabrics with their hair wrapped in beautiful scarves or braided down to their bust lines. The valet had stacked the parking lot because it was going to be a full house. Everyone was coming together for a night out on the town. The show was by "Urban Brush Women" with their premier performance "Hair and Other Stories".

MASC had partnered with a braidbar and Curly Kids Hair- giving people the opportunity to leave with a trending braided, twisted style if they wished. To all my multiculti friends out there- Ford Theaters is the place to be for a fun summer night out.

The evening I spent at Ford Theaters gave me the chance to experience a part of black culture that I loved- it felt authentic, creative, festive, and fresh. Also, I felt like I belonged. It seemed that anyone could walk into that theater and feel the tangible energy of diversity, openness, and zero walls (literally). I will definitely find myself there on many summer nights to come in the future. Let's make it a date?

Xoxo, A.
