I remember being in 7th grade, reaching for my "Mixed Chicks" hair products and thinking that whoever invented these products was, in a way, my hero.

Fast forward to my junior year of college, where I found myself sitting down with Kim Etheredge, owner and founder of Mixed Chicks, preparing to be interviewed by the Washington Post. On my left sat Sonia Smith Kang, owner of Mixed Up Clothing, and another multiracial woman I admired. It felt surreal to say the least.

Kristal Zook, an award winning journalist for the Washington Post, Medium, New York Times etc. was working on a series of articles about being mixed race in America. I highly encourage checking them out- link is at the bottom of the page.

Her series of articles include interviews with the cast of "Mixed-ish", the owner of "Mixed up Clothing" and yes, me!

Sitting down between Kim Etheredge and Sonia Kang to be interviewed by Kristal Zook, I found myself realizing that what you put out into the universe is magnetic. Light attracts light. And finding your "why" will put you in all the right places at all the right times. I've come to realize it is less about "what" you are doing and much more about "why" you are doing it. That is what connected me to these three remarkable women, we all had a passion to empower women in the multiracial community.

If you don't want to read the entire article let me summarize what my section was about.

I spoke about the event I was preparing to co-host with MASC that would be sponsored by Mixed Chicks saying the goal of the event was to leave the event saying "I am proud to have curly, kinky hair. I am proud of my identity."

If you are multiracial I suggest checking out http://kristalbrentzook.com/.

You'll more than likely find some reads that hit home for you.

Xoxo, A.
